Steampunk Chocolate Tasting
Nikki Woolfolk was professionally trained in New York City and Vancouver. Her Tasting Event/Workshop on “Chocolate – From Bean to Bar” includes the history of chocolate, the current politics of the bean and how it has been on-going since Victorian age, and How to Taste Chocolate (which resembles a Wine Tasting!) with Sight, Smell, Sound, Taste and Touch. There will, of course, be splendid chocolate for all within this VERY limited-seating event! What makes Ms. Woolfolk’s chocolate company “LeBeau Chocolates & Confections” unique is that it pairs the mundane to the exotic with high end chocolate in ways that delight the eyes and satisfy the taste buds. Chef Alex LeBeau is a fictional Chocolatier who lives in Honfleur, a parish in Louisiana that does not exist in an era that never came to fruition. What is real is the chocolates and confections.

You won't want to miss this spirited event!

When you were sick in the years before refrigeration and socialized medicine what did you do? Well, people didn’t live very long. The water was poisonous, food was poisonous and there were no doctors to speak of. Join Warren Bobrow for a fascinating presentation on healing tonics, bitters and fabulous Bar Hill gin from Vermont- distilled from Raw Honey. Raw honey has powerful antioxidant qualities. He will produce a healing “gin and juice” with bitters added for good measure. the juice shall be freshly squeezed orange juice

Also, and as important, rum (from Busted Barrel/Jersey Artisan Distilling in Fairfield, NJ) was also known to the sailor as “Courage” Rum helped a sailor wake up in the morning and go to sleep at night. When combined with herbal elixirs and bitters along with handcrafted tonics and syrups- rum supersedes the ‘cheap-booze cruise’ statement and becomes something quite elegant and…healing!

Warren Bobrow, author of Apothecary Cocktails and Whiskey Cocktails, and over three hundred articles on food, wine, and cocktail mixology, is hugely knowledgeable in the world of cocktails. In addition to his popular blog, The Cocktail Whisperer, he writes for the Williams-Sonoma blog, Foodista.com, Voda magazine, Saveur, Serious Eats, The Beverage Journal and Beverage News and Edible New Jersey. Warren has taught social media and food writing at the New School in NY as well as the Institute for Culinary Education. He is a Ministry of Rum judge and was the only journalist from the USA asked to participate in Fete de la Gastronomie 2012 in Paris. Copies of his books will be available for sale.

Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band Listening Party
Ticketed Event (Tickets available soon),
ENSMB Listening Party

Emperor Norton’s Stationary Marching Band combines the rich musical history of the circus and the vagabond peoples of Europe with the raw energy of avant-garde jazz, the burning heat of funk and the irreverence and fun of today’s Vaudeville for a sound that is somehow familiar yet like no other. Label them anyway you like! Call them avant world fusion, call them experimental big band, call them gypsy steamfunk, call them circus noise! They may be tough to sum up, but it’s easy to tell you they’ll show you a good time and they’ll get a crowd dancing!

Formed from the most talented deadbeats and drifters that could be rounded up, this group of raucous and rambunctious musicians will honk, wail, blow, beat, bounce, scream and serenade their way into your hearts. Playing anything that won’t break from vigorous use; their instrumentation is a unique blend of brass, winds, violin, accordion and an eclectic rhythm section.

ENSMB has performed at events ranging from HONK! Fest (in Somerville MA, Seattle WA and Austin TX), Outside the Box Festival, Boston Summer Arts Weekend, Salem Jazz & Soul Festival, and the Steampunk World’s Fair. They often can be found collaborating with the Boston Circus Guild, as well as frequently sharing bills with a talented network of bands from the robust Boston music scene. In addition to festivals and unorthodox appearances, the band can also be found performing at venues all across the Boston area, including The Sinclair, Brighton Music Hall, Johnny D’s, OBERON, The Middle East, TT the Bear’s, Church, Lizard Lounge and Club Passim, as well as performing at Steampunk events all over the Northeast.

Belle Époque Absinthe Tasting with Scott MacDonald
Join us for a hands-on, intimate workshop on the history of the famed spirit absinthe, including a demonstration of actual absinthe antiques used in 19th century French cafés and bistros! Author S. B. MacDonald will discuss the mythology, truths, and details of the spirit’s banning and reintroduction a century later. Watch and learn as absinthe is prepared authentically in the magical antiques from MacDonald’s book, Absinthe Antiques: A collection from la Belle Époque.

These genuine pieces of history are straight from the very era from which Steampunk is derived! Attendees will prepare their own genuine absinthe, correctly, and traditionally, using reproduction fountains, glasses, and spoons. Guests will mingle and enjoy their absinthe during the party after the presentation. Several of the finest, most highly-regarded absinthes in the world will be available, and as a bonus for 2015, Our host will procure and share a special imported French absinthe with the guests. He will be signing copies of his book, available at a SPWF discount.

The authentic absinthe ritual is truly wonderful, brings people together, and slows down time. In fact, MacDonald refers to it as “western civilization’s tea ceremony.”
